There are a few essential components which keeps us going throughout the day, without which we don’t feel fresh. One of such agent that most people rely on more than their own self is coffee. Today, most of us start our day with a hot cup of coffee and then many of us don’t even know how many cups we consume during the course of day before retiring to bed at night.

Many of us don’t even know if coffee is good for health or not? Before discussing that let us discuss the ingredients of coffee. Coffee contains a naturally occuring chemical stimulant called caffeine. Caffeine is believed to increase the activity of neurons or brain cells. Caffeine in coffee creates a mix of both positive and negative effects. Ideally only 2 cups of coffee or 200 to 250 grams of caffeine are considered safe in an adult person.

Excess caffeine is associated with Negative aspects:

a. Addiction potential:

Addiction potential of caffeine is equivalent to nicotine, an essential or addictive component of cigarette and therefore presents with almost same withdrawal symptoms but with slightly lower intensity. Caffeinated beverages are now becoming one of the very popular beverages of all times with a variety of flavors and combinations added in the original coffee beans. This increases the potential for abuse and causes addiction.

If you take more than 6 to 8 cups of coffee a day, the addicition possibilities are high. If you didn’t get caffeine or coffee, you may feel dizzy, lazy and sleepy. When coffee addicts withdraw from coffee, they experience withdrawal symptoms such as inability to concentrate, headache and poor comprehension.

b. Ulcer or gastritis:

Individuals who consume a lot of black coffee are liable to develop ulcer or gastritis as caffeine increases the acid production from stomach cells.

c. Other potential problems:

Excess coffee consumption can also create caffeine intoxication. This can lead to abnormalities in rhythm of heart (very fast heart rate), nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and irritability. Some studies have also linked increased coffee intake to increased blood pressure.

d. Insomnia:

Caffeine intake is one of the very important and common causes of inability to sleep due to increase in activity of brain cells.

Positive aspects of coffee intake:

Moderate intake of coffee has some positive effects too. Moderate amounts of caffeine increases the functional activity of brain, increase energy levels and is also protective against Lung cancer, cancer of breast and cancers of gastro-intestinal tract. Moreover, it is also believed to be protective againstkParkinson’s disease and Diabetes Mellitus. The main condition here is moderate intake.

Is Coffee good for you or not?

Having said all that, it is now for us to decide if positive aspects of coffee can over-shadow negative aspects or not. Following recommendations may help you to make use of coffee for betterment of your health without causing any harm.

  • Do not drink more than 2 cups of coffee in a day.
  • Avoid drinking coffee on empty stomach and especially with cigarette.
  • Do not drink coffee after 5 PM if you want to sleep at normal, regular time.
  • It is better to replace your regular coffee with decaffeinated coffee.
