Remedies for Chronic Constipation:

Constipation is one of a very common bowel problem which most of the people don’t even consider a problem until complications of chronic constipation begin to appear. There is no set definition of constipation, which is why most people don’t seek medical attention. Moreover, consistency, amount and frequency of bowel movement vary greatly from individual to individual and depend on a number of factors.

What is chronic constipation?

On the basis of above explanation, it is very difficult to establish a diagnosis of constipation by ordinary standards. However if one or more of the following criteria are satisfied for a period of more than 6 months, you may be suffering from chronic constipation:

  • Infrequent bowel movement, which means bowel movement of two less than two in a period of 1 week for at least 3 months.
  • Passage of very hard stool that irritates the lining of rectum or lead to bleeding during bowel movement.
  • Incomplete evacuation of rectum or feeling of inability to empty out the rectum completely.
  • Straining upon bowel movement.

Why is chronic constipation dangerous?

Chronic constipation is considered a health risk due to many reasons. Complications of constipation take longer to occur but affect the quality of life:

Hemorrhoids occur because of constant straining required to evacuate rectum fully. Hemorrhoids may be internal or external and once developed, they regress only after surgery or other therapeutic regimens. Hemorrhoids further increase constipation if left untreated and may also become infected.

Hernia occurs due to persistently raised abdominal pressure that force gut herniation from the sites of potential weakness (inguinal hernia or scar hernia are very common in patients of chronic constipation). Before repairing hernia, a permanent solution of constipation must be looked for to prevent recurrence of hernia.

When hard stool is allowed to pass through anal canal, the stool may damage the soft lining and may lead to fissure, cracks that may bleed. Once fissures develop, constipation becomes even more difficult to manage as the process of bowel movement becomes very painful that people prefer not to pass stool.

Anemia related complications also arise due to poor appetite, blood loss from hemorrhoids, anal fissures and poor absorption of nutrients.

Remedies for constipation:

Following remedies may help you get rid of all these potential complications:

  • Drinking plenty of water is one of the most safest and effective remedy to get rid of chronic constipation by increasing moisture and hydration of stool making it easier to pass through anal canal.
  • Increasing fiber content of diet by increasing the intake of fresh vegetables, fruits and salads also helps in improving the degree of constipation by increasing the bulk of stool. Moreover brown bread and husk are also effective remedies for chronic constipation.
  • Regular exercise is required to enhance the movement of gut and to improve appetite too. Physical activity is also believed to improve the metabolism and digestion of food that helps in relieving constipation.
  • For complicated constipation (that is leading to above mentioned health issues) lactulose enema and decussate are also effective and risk-free constipation relieving aids.
